6-Week Weign-In

Well, I had my 6-week post-op weigh in today, and I've lost a total of 36 lbs! I can't believe it! I felt like I had plateaued and had not lost much since my 2-week visit, but I have lost 14 lbs. since then! And that is above the average, so they tell me. I wonder how much muscle weight I've gained due to exercising? So let's see, what's the visual for 34 pounds? Maybe a 2½ year old? A big sack of dog food? Whatever might weighs 34 pounds, I'm not having to tote it every step of my life anymore.

I also had a nutrition class for 6-week post-op patients. It was such a relief to hear others' questions and concerns and get a solid answer. I found out I'm pretty much doing the right things, but was reminded that I have got to slow down at mealtimes. That is so hard, and I find myself having to watch the clock to be sure my meal stretches 20-30 minutes. I found out my protein requirement has gone down a bit, since I have theoretically finished healing from surgery and my protein needs are less. (I need 50-60 grams of protein a day, rather than 65-75 grams immediately post-op.) This is a good thing; less need for protein supplements, which by and large taste horrible.

I also found out I'm doing better with my eating that some of the others in the class. Some of these people were telling how they throw up at every meal. I couldn't face that three times a day! Some of the folks there have not eaten out yet (!) and have no clue what to order from a menu. Some have not done any exercise yet, even walking. I've been hitting the water aerobics three times a week, and hope to swim in between classes shortly.

I will see the doctor next week for his "official opinion", but my opinion is that life is good, I'm adjusting pretty well, and I'm so happy I had this procedure done. I need to get my husband to take a picture of me that I can post for y'all. I'll see if I can find a big "before" picture to post too, for comparison. Everyone tells me they notice it in my face. I'd like to notice it in my belly.

Oh Becky - I am SO excited for you! I know that it must be very hard - I remember Irma not being able to handly it well at the beginning - and I am very happy that you are doing so well with your meals, etc. I can't imagine how thrilled you must be to see the weight disappearing. Way to go, my friend! Congratulations on a fine start!
