I enjoy going to World Market. It reminds me of how Pier One used to be, but they have international foods and wines. So there I was, examining the British foods section, looking for a British Kit-Kat bar (which I've been told are much better than USA Kit-Kats), when I saw it: a can of Spotted Dick. Never mind my rule that I don't buy Heinz brand anymore, I had to own this can of Spotted Dick.
The label says it is Sponge Pudding. I believe pudding is a generic British term for dessert. So it's a sponge cake. When you shake it, you can hear and feel that it is a solid mass inside, that kind of slides up and down in the can. I'm not sure why they call it dick, nor why it's spotted, but I could not leave this little treasure on the shelf. If I ever get the nerve to open it and taste it, I'll be sure to report back. Until then, it's in my pantry, right next to my emergency can of dehydrated water.

Oh Becky - Spotted Dick is an old favourite! Serve it with hot custard - Yummy!
It is actually a Suet pudding and is called "spotted" because it contains currants.
Yes, it IS stodgy, but for an English Winter it's very comforting. I probably have my old recipe somewhere. (I haven't made it for years as we have lived in warmer climes for the last 19 years.)
ROFLOL!
Hang onto it - if you don't get the nerve to eat it, it will make a great gag gift for the right person!!!
