Tomorrow is the University of Texas - Oklahoma University football game. It is held about half-way between the two rivals in Dallas' Cotton Bowl. A whole 92,000 people attend this game, a measly showing any night at Tiger Stadium. I was only vaguely aware of it until today. The best way I can explain it is.... it's sort of like the "Bayou Classic" football game, between Southern University & Grambling State. I barely knew it was going on, I don't care about the outcome, but liked to laugh at the intensity of the fans.
So it is with the UT/OU game. I was at the car wash today, and I sat by a guy wearing burnt orange (UT). Out comes his truck from the wash full of UT stickers, Texas Ex signs (that is what they call their Alumni), and even a longhorn tow hitch cover. No sooner does he leave than a guy wearing an OU shirt come out to sit down. He even has a red car, presumably to match OU's colors. Before he drove off, he re-affixed his OU flags to his windows.
I ate lunch at Pei Wei (say Pay Way, not Pee Wee!) today. It reminds me of PF Chang's without the prices or the table service. I see a couple sitting there. She had on a burnt orange UT cap with a longhorn on it made out of rhinestones. A bit flashy, but it was obvious she knew what game was tomorrow. They stayed long enough to see a woman and a couple of kids coming into the restaurant. The kids were dressed in red/white OU team wear. Given the history of this UT/OU rivalry, that was probably the safest way for her to pick a side, dressing her kids in her school's colors!
Not to be outdone, the purple and gold is flying free up here, too. I had DH install a flag pole holder to the front of the house the other day, and we keep our purple flag with the gold LSU on it flying round the clock. We laughed when DH said "Should we put a light on it for night time?" I said "That's for the American flag!" Hey, we were trying to be respectful, anyway!
Political signs are all but unseen around here. I'm not sure if it's apathy, or just that everyone I can think of that I've ever met or know up here is a Republican! If they arenot necessarily voting for John McCain, at least they will be voting against Obama. So why bother putting a sign out advertising that? This contrasts greatly to Baton Rouge, where we put up political signs for dog catcher, and often have to choose between two dog catcher candidates who have either been in illegal dog fighting in the past or do not care for animals but are trying to launch their political career. We put up signs for city council. Signs for parish representatives. And for big elections like Governor and Senator, well, better rent an auger to sink that 18-foot-wide billboard in nice and deep.
I have seen a couple Obama bumper stickers around here. I figure they're from Dallas, maybe lost in our neck of the woods. Or maybe someone put an Obama sticker on their Cadillac as a joke, and they haven't' realized it yet. When I say I've met non one who supports Obama in my neck of the woods, I mean no one. Well, okay, except for illegal immigrants, but they only get 6 votes each thanks to Acorn.
