Well, summer is in full swing already! My son is going to his last summer of Cub Scout Day Camp this week! Next summer he will be a Boy Scout, and will probably be spending some weeks of summer camped out in a tent somewhere! The day camp goes from 8:20 AM until 4:30 PM -- that's a long day! It's held outside at a local park, just around the corner from us. There are plenty of trees to get out of the sun, a creek to fish in, and tents are set up at BB shooting, archery, and other activities that require open spaces. He seems to be having a blast, and is coming home every day with a new craft or other fun thing he's made. Today they made a candle out of beeswax. It smells wonderful! They also made a game out of a triangle of wood and golf tees. I'm not sure of the name, but it's the game they have on the tables at Cracker Barrel, and the object is to jump tees and leave just one remaining. Friday is the Egg Drop, when they boys are supposed to bring raw eggs wrapped up to see if they survive a drop from a helicopter. We did it one year in Louisiana, and his egg survived by being wrapped in styrofoam egg cartons. You could actually see the egg, suspended amongst about 3 styro egg cartons. If they can get eggs from the farm to the store to my home, the egg cartons must be pretty good. And they were. This year he wants to try those air pillows that come in shipping boxes. I think that will work, too.
My daughter has been going swimming with me each morning. She seems to enjoy it. This week we are competing with the Life guarding class going on in 2 of the 3 lap lanes. All for us lap swimmers are doubling up on the 1 lane they leave us, or swimming across a shallow end next to the lanes. It still works, but I didn't realize how much I rely on the black stripe and the black + at the end of each lane to guide me. Not having them does make it more tricky.
