Well, the kids are out of school for summer. Finally. June 3rd was their last day. It's all been downhill since they took the TAKS test (state testing, akin to Louisiana's LEAP) in mid-April. My son had his 4th grade graduation and awards yesterday. They called each child on stage for their awards and a final hug or high-five with their teachers and the principals. My son got an award for Perfect Attendance, and it reminded me that I don't' think he's ever missed a day of school EVER. He also got a couple of nice academic awards for his writing and math. One teacher was in all-out tears by the time she got to the end of her class rolls. The kids weren't nearly as upset at she was. My son also got a goodly number of coupons with his awards, for free snow cones, free games of bowling, and free kids' meals at our favorite Mexican restaurant. My daughter had "Sixth Grade Send-Off" yesterday, which was basically a play-day outside. While 6th graders are much too cool for bounce houses (the Texas word for Space Walks or Fun Jumps), they are not above an inflatable obstacle course or high slide. I think they had a few other games outside, and got to pig out on Popsicles and candy. Then, loaded up with sugar, they turn them loose to the parents.
My daughter told me yesterday she was selected for Honors Choir next year in 7th grade. And I didn't even know she'd tried out! Only about ten soon-to-be 7th graders made it, she said. The other 30 or so selected for Honors Choir are going to be 8th graders in the fall. Her daddy is proud because yesterday after school, rather than going home and hanging out, she went to her new school to try out for Show Choir. Her dad was in Show Choir in high school and loved it, and he is so pleased she is showing an interest in it. When I left her there for tryouts in the cafetorium, she was 1 of 3 soon-to-be 7th graders trying out; the other 20 or so were going into 8th grade. This may further prove my agreement with the phrase "Eighty percent of life is just showing up." Not to take away from any of her God-given talent, but sometimes showing up for job interviews, tryouts, or other events is the hardest and biggest part of the entire ordeal. I'm proud of her for venturing out to do things like that.
So here it is, the first morning we didn't have to get up and get to school for 7:45. I slept blissfully until 9:30, and the kids weren't' bothering me at 7:00 asking if they could play on the computer. My daughter had a friend spend the night, so they were busy doing girl stuff upstairs. And my son had just gotten his latest Lego set, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. So he's busy upstairs assembling and reassembling it. I'm celebrating the first day of summer break by washing clothes, blogging, and cleaning the kitchen. Don't you envy me? :-)
