Mom, I need shoes....

Black Shoes
The preteen group at church puts on the Christmas Eve pageant at our church. DD threw her had in the ring, and was chosen to be an angel. She stayed after church today for rehearsal and costume fitting. She had a blast. But she came home informing me that she needed white or black shoes to go with her angel costume. Neither of which she would otherwise choose or wear. So at 5:00 PM today, she and I headed out to Payless Shoe Store to find a cheap pair of shoes suitable to what an angel would wear. And I say cheap because I'm pretty sure she'll never wear them again.

My DD has hard-to-fit feet. They are very wide (like her parents' feet) and we usually are able to choose between 2 pair of shoes that fit (or at least don't hurt), as opposed to selecting from the myriad of cute shoes on the shelves that are marked her size but do not fit her foot.

The first pair of black shoes I showed her she pronounced ugly. Of course, there are no white shoes to be had in December, unless you go to the satin dye-able shoes, which all had heels. We decided that would not work for her since her spot on-stage is standing on a bale of hay. After a bit of pickiness and nose wrinkling on her part, I finally told her to sit down and start trying on whatever shoes I brought her. As luck would have it, the ones that looked and felt best were the ones she initially called ugly. I can only hope she will consider wearing these black shoes again before she outgrows them.

Red Shoes
Anyone heard that pitiful "Christmas" song about red shoes? It's a kid wanting to buy his dying mother a pair of red shoes in which to be buried. Can I just say right now I hate that song? I heard it once, bawled like a baby, and now change the station every time I hear it. I mean, honestly, who would send a child out to buy a red pair of shoes to bury his own mother in? Before she's even dead? I resent the author and performer taking advantage of the sensitive nature of the season to peddle a song like that. There. I feel better.

I totally agree about the red shoes song! I refuse to listen to it, too!

Absolutely. I hate really sad songs or stories that serve no purpose but to make you cry or scare you into making a decision.

Besides, no one looks at your feet in a casket. Why even wear shoes?

As a matter of fact, I hate shoes so much I'm going to make sure that no one buries me with any on.
