I guess the Internet has something to do w/ it. We all use acronyms typing on bulletin boards, chatting, and emailing so we don't have to type out long words or phrases. But if you read it aloud, it was usually proper English. "My FIL and MIL are coming from OOT next week; OTOH, they usually bring our DGM to visit." (My father-in-law and mother-in-law are coming from out of town next week; on the other hand, they usually bring our dear grandmother to visit.)
Then came texting by phone. We have to put up w/ those same teen- and twenty-something texters visiting bulletin boards and sending us emails using text abbreviations at us: "Zup. Can NE1 help? gr8! TY CU2MORO." (what's up? Can anyone help me? Great. Thank you. See you tomorrow.)
Well, now here it comes. Recipe Czar, a great recipe website, has now officially given up redirecting misspellings, and has now changed the spelling of their name: http://www.recipezaar.com/recipes.php?q=cookies&xp=1
Apparently no one Googling them could spell "czar" with a silent C, so they just lopped it off! So now it is Recipe Zar?!?! Makes me sad. I don't' think the next generation will be able to communicate face-to-face without embarrassing themselves... unless they only talk to eat other.
