Little Things Make Life Good

It's the small things that make me smile.
Oh sure, winning the lottery would make me grin... but I'd have to part with a buck to buy a ticket. If life is nothing but mountaintop experiences, then the mountaintops seem like an even keel. So it's the little things that make me chuckle and grin. I thought I'd share a few of them.

1. When you're in a public restroom, and both of the huge rolls of toilet paper have an end hanging down, and you can pull from two rolls at once. That is so sweet! It only takes half the time to get the same amount of paper.

2. When I see a mom with kids in a stroller struggling to get through a non-automatic door. I usually grab the door and hold it for her. More often that not, she seems so surprised that someone would stop and help and thanks me profusely. I always say "no problem, I remember those days well." And remembering them makes me smile.

3. When I'm struggling to take packages into the post office to mail, and someone holds the door for me. This is much more common here than in my hometown.

4. When something I'm going to buy anyway is on sale. From groceries to shoes for the kids, I'm am going to make the purchase that day, regardless. But finding it on sale is just confirms that the day is a good day!

5. Hearing my daughter practice piano. She's so good at it, and has a real sense of rhythm and beat. She'll go up or down a couple octaves, to make it sound "scary" or "like fairy music." I love to hum along with it while puttering around the house.

6. Seeing my son in his Webelos uniform. He's so handsome with his khaki shirt and plaid neckerchief and hat. He's nearly as tall as my shoulder and I realize childhood really is over in a blink of an eye (unless you're the child).

7. Answered prayers. The kind that make you punch the air and say "YES!" A friend's heart problems seem to have resolved with minimally invasive therapy, and another friend's child accomplished what many of us thought was impossible. Instances like that make life woth living.
