Conductor Bob1950's diesel engine (click photo to enlarge)
Our Labor Day was spent on the historic Grapevine Express Railroad! It leaves from Grapevine, TX, and travels a few miles into the Historic Fort Worth Stockyards, following the old Cotton Belt run. We rode the same tracks where cotton was taken from all points into Fort Worth to sell.
The train had and engine and 4 cars, 2 with windows and padded seats, and 2 open-air with wooden seats. All 4 cars dated back to the 1920's, and even had ceiling fans and stained glass in the ceilings. The railings were wrought iron, and the wooden seats were reversible, depending upon which way the train was headed and which way you desired to sit. Just about the time we got to the Stockyards, we heard a "gunshot" and there were cowboys on horses approaching : train robbers! They boarded and handed out "money" (advertising their wild west cowboy services) and cracked some lame but funny jokes. Then they wished us well and rode off into the sunset as we pulled into the Stockyard Station.
We had a couple hours to shop in the Fort Worth Stockyards. It's a place full of shops, steak houses, cowboys and cowgirls on horseback, clubs, saloons, and western stores. It was a great atmosphere. The streets are brick and cobblestone that I presume to be vintage. Then we walked back to the train station and caught the train back to our car. Round trip, it took about 5½ hours. All in all, it was a great adventure!
