Today I am going to get a hair cut. The days I go to the salon are the best days and make me happy. It's my time with nothing to do but read celebrity gossip magazines. I go about every 5 weeks for a cut since I have a short hairstyle. If I had longer hair, I could probably stretch the time between visits. I've tried 6 weeks between cuts, and I look like a hag the last week.
There's a new phenomenon happening here with beauty salons. No longer are they a big room with lots of chairs and mirrors and everyone gabbing and walking through to their stations. Here, the trend is "all suite salons" where there is no receptionist. You make your appointment with your hairdresser, you pay her, and you stay in her little suite or private room. There's even a sink in there so you don't' have to leave to get shampooed. The only time you need to leave the suite is if you need to sit under a dryer. And if you lose your stylist's cell phone number, you are in a rough spot, as there is no general salon phone number you can call to make appointments or speak to your stylist. Advertising for the stylist is all word-of-mouth, too. Walk-ins have to meander through the suites asking if a stylist is available being no reception desk. So only well-established stylists with a long list of clients can move to those type of salons.
I've decided I don't care for the all suite concept. I like being in the middle of all the action, picking up snippets of conversation here and there, or even joining in. Seeing other hairstyles and colors come and go. Seeing who the busy stylists are, and who sit waiting in their chairs a good bit of my visit. Seeing up-do's during prom or homecoming season, or brides getting ready for their formal photos or their wedding that night. I found a stylist I liked, ans she and some coworkers moved to an all suite salon, so if I wanted to continue going to her, I had to move, too. We'll see how long my stylist lasts there. Stylists move around salons about as much as chefs change restaurants, so I may not have to go there for long.
